Departed may not rest in peace

Departed may not rest in peace

I WOULD like to draw attention to an intent by the current Tamworth Regional Council to sell off an area of land adjoining the Tamworth Cemetery and bounded by Jewry St and the Showground Rd, for industrial purposes.

As far as I am concerned, this is a pure and simple money grab by council and shows absolutely no respect to the families and descendants of those whose last resting place is the Tamworth Cemetery.

To even consider “jamming” a cemetery between two or more factories is not only poor civic planning, worse, in this instance, it is a personal affront to this community.

During my term on the former Tamworth City Council, this proposal was raised by staff and soundly rejected by council and it should be again!

To suggest or consider such a proposal is obnoxious to the extreme and I urge our community to contact all potential councillors standing at the forthcoming election and let them know your objection to the proposal and request their acknowledgement of their position if elected.

Cemeteries are supposed to be a place of peace and rest, not a place of industry and noise.
