Police have used capsicum spray to subdue a speeding motorist who allegedly became aggressive towards officers in south-east Queensland.

Police observed the 40-year-old man allegedly driving above the speed limit on Stewart Street in Gympie about 9.10pm (AEST) yesterday, a spokesman said.

Officers lost sight of the car, but it was observed allegedly driving dangerously a short time later.

The 40-year-old male driver stopped the car and allegedly became aggressive towards officers, who used capsicum spray to subdue him.

The man has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, speeding, driving while disqualified, obstructing police and evading police.

He will remain in custody until an appearance in Gympie Magistrates Court tomorrow.
