Seconds fed to Lions to sort out headaches

GROUP 4 Second Division’s representative side goes up against West Lions in a special “opposed” training session at Scully Park tonight to try and sort out some winning plays for Saturday’s opening game of its Centenary Cup campaign.

And the Chris Darlington-coached side does that with some “new” faces after injury caused some changes to the 17-man squad.

The most noticeable change is that of Dean Hoy.

The versatile Dungowan Cowboy, also a noted goalkicker, comes into the squad for Cowboy teammate Jace Wallington.

“Jace tore a thigh muscle,” said assistant coach and selector Mick Schmiedel.

“That’s why he didn’t play against Bendemeer at the weekend.”

Tonight’s opposed session against West might also help coach Darlington and Schmiedel sort out some positional headaches.

“We’ve only named a squad at this stage,” Schmiedel said.

“We haven’t decided the run on team as yet.”

Group 4 plays the fledgling Barwon Darling League side in their first match of the Centenary Cup competition in Gilgandra on Saturday.

A win there propels them to a second round clash Sunday with further success possibly earning the side a home game at Scully Park as part of a huge Centenary Cup/Group 4 day at Scully Park.

GROUP 4 SECOND DIVISION SQUAD: Damien Pittman, Paul Tongue, Dean Hoy (Dungowan), Shane Kilby, Jamie Walden (Bendemeer), Sean Nean, Robbie Bergan, Tony Murray (Manilla), Michael Beattie, Stewart Porter, Mitch Dale, Brian Darcy (Werris Creek), Michael Northey, Geoff Goodridge, Paul Ford (Kootingal), Tim Mallise, Jayse Starr (Barraba). Coach Chris Darlington, assistant coach Mick Schmiedel.
