G4 SECOND DIVISION RUGBY LEAGUE
GRAND FINAL
DUNGOWAN v
WERRIS CREEK
GRAND final day arrives for Group 4 Second Division clubs Dungowan and Werris Creek tomorrow and both sides are pinning their hopes on an improved performance after their major semi-final thriller two weeks ago.
The Cowboys won that game in golden point extra time and the right to host the big one but the Creek was not far off the mark and knows it can make the adjustments needed to reverse the result.
“Last time our defence was good against them,” Creek captain-coach Stewart Porter said.
“It was just silly mistakes.
“If we cut those out we should go pretty good.
“We’ve got a game plan.”
Dungowan also made plenty of errors and coach Mick Schmiedel is certain his side will lose this time if there is a repeat of that poor ball
handling.
“If we play like we did in the major we’ll get beat and get beat comfortably,” he said.
“We were probably just lucky our defence was up to scratch that day.
“Our attack was all over the shop but our defence was strong and cut down a lot of their attack.
“I’ve always said that every other game during the year is a practice for this one so everything should be on song.
“There are no more
tomorrows.”
The Cowboys lost last year’s grand final to Uralla and hope a few veterans of that campaign will lift the side to a victory this time around.
“Dean Hoy and Gav White will stand up,” Schmiedel said.
“They’ve been playing well for us all year.
“I think Dean feels last year’s loss the most because a lot of people expected that he would be the reason we would win it last year.
“We lost a lot of momentum when he and Paul (Tongue) broke their arms before the semis.
“When they came back they weren’t the same as you could imagine but this year they’re playing well and we haven’t had any major injury problems going into the semis.”
Schmiedel said whichever side could handle the grand final pressure would also go a long way to taking the trophy.
He and Amos Fenn are the only players in doubt for the Cowboys.
If they play, the side will be unchanged from the major semi.
The Creek will have to make at least one change from last week’s win over Bendemeer in the final.
“We’ve got a couple of injuries but we don’t know how many are out,” Porter said.
“There’s one definite, Michael Saunders.
“But Mick Beattie’s back for this one.
“He hasn’t played for a while but he’ll come in as a forward.
“He can play in the backs too.”
Creek was also waiting on last night’s judiciary hearings, with Ben Slater and Ray Saunders needing to avoid suspension to play.
Michael Sampson is likely to come into the side if required.
