SIR WINALOT has a chance to atone for ill luck in the Tamworth Cup when he contests Sunday’s $20,000 Pryde’s Sky Channel Gold Gunnedah Cup (1600m).
The seven-year-old gelding was 15th in the Tamworth Cup and yesterday allotted 58kg, second top weight to With A Chance’s 60kg, for Sunday’s Gunnedah Cup.
The Mark Mason-trained gelding was well placed in the Tamworth Cup and angling for a run when “squeezed out” to finish back in the field.
“Dale Spriggs had him fourth or fifth and pulled out to make his run between horses,” Mason said.
“But the two of them came together and squeezed him out. He never got going after that.”
Sir Winalot pulled up okay and has worked well since.
He carried 56kg in the Tamworth Cup and has risen two kilograms to 58kg.
“I rang the handicappers up,” Mason said.
“Don’t know why. They told me why he got 58 but it didn’t make much sense to me. You can’t argue with them.”
While With A Chance received 60kg topweight for Gunnedah Tamworth Cup runner-up Ready As went up 3.5kg to 56.5kg.
He was 10th in last year’s Gunnedah Cup with 57.5kg.
Three of the first four to finish in last Sunday’s Willow Tree Cup are also nominated for Sunday’s Cup - Linga Longa (4th), Pants Man (2nd) and winner Regency Pearl.
Regency Pearl carried 50kg (with Jessica Drury’s claim) to win last Sunday’s Willow Tree Cup.
He will carry 55kgs in Sunday’s Cup.
While he’s won three of his last four starts Regency Pearl was last to Linga Longa in last year’s Gunnedah Cup.
He has won two of his six previous starts at Gunnedah though, and one of only four gallopers to have won at Gunnedah previously.
Linga Longa (Ian Symons) won last year’s Cup and was second in an open 1600m in June 2007.
Pants Man scored his first win at Gunnedah as a two-year-old in May 2005 and was second to Satin Express in an open 1600m there last year.
The only other Gunnedah winner is the Greg Bennett-trained Sharamagic.
She won a Class 3 2050m at Riverside in 2006 and returned last year to finish fourth to Linga Longa in the Cup.
Ready As was 10th to Linga Longa last year at his only Riverside start while Fair Trial was third to Linga Longa in that same race.
The Armidale Cup runner-up was also third at Riverside in May 2005 as a two-year-old.
Craig Martin’s Campeche, 5th in Sunday’s Willow Tree Cup, has had one start at Gunnedah for a second to I Love Kos in a 2006 Class 3.
Lambeth Walk (Sue Grills) has also had no luck in his one Gunnedah start, finishing sixth to Hot Gemini in a June 2007 1000m Open.
Ancient Mariner and Victory Charm have also missed out at Gunnedah, Victory Charm finishing seventh to Zedivain in the 2006 Cup.
Sir Winalot aso failed at his one Gunnedah start, finishing fourth to the Jeff Englebrecht-trained West Royale in a 1000m Open. Sunday’s Cup also doubles as a heat of the PJ Bell Country Championship.
Sir Winalot won that PJ Bell Country Championship final in 2005.
“Be nice to win it again,” Mark Mason said.
“If he’s going all right we’ll look at going back down for that.”
