TAMWORTH will be chasing a breakthrough title at this weekend’s Northern Half State U13 Girls’ Hockey Championships at Coffs Harbour.
The girls bussed it to the coast yesterday morning hoping to go one better than the 15s and 18s, who have both been consigned to runners-up after narrow finals losses, and emulate last weekend’s boys’ success.
Tamworth will field A and B sides at the championships with the As contesting the top division, while Bec D’Ambros’s B side will play in Division 2.
The As have a tough draw, pooled alongside defending champions Sydney, Parramatta, North Shore and Manning Valley, and will have a job ahead of them to make tomorrow’s final, coach Karen Psarakis conceded.
But Psarakis, not discounting the potential of the side, wasn’t pushing the finals and said finishing top two in their pool was the goal.
“I’ve got a pretty young side. But they’re kids with big hearts and I’m happy with how we’re going,” she said.
“We’ve had practice games against the PSSA girls and PSSA boys and we went well at the Northern Lights.”
She has retained just two from last year’s A side and said, for many, it would be the first time they had toured, with last year’s championships being held on home soil.
“That will be a test in itself,” she said.
Another test will be adapting to grass for the two games they are scheduled to play, the first of which is their opener against North Shore at 8am this morning.
“Team-wise they’ve come together,” she said.
“They just need to improve (from Northern Lights) – quicker passing and moving the ball around quicker.”
The Bs will play in pool 2 alongside Scone, Coffs Harbour, Mid North Coast and North Shore (2).
“It’s the better pool for us to be in,” D’Ambros said.
She said the side had been improving at training and was hoping that as they got to know each other better they would gel with each other better on the field.
“It’s a young side. There’s only a couple of 13s in there,” she said.
“But they’re looking forward to the championships.”
New England is also sending two sides to the titles.
They will play in the opposite pool to Tamworth in both divisions.
