South Tamworth stays in the running for title

22/07/2008 8:58:00 AM
SOUTH Tamworth began its tilt at the women’s No.3 State pennants finals at Tamworth City Bowling Club yesterday with a mixed day but is still in the running for tomorrow’s final.

In the opening round the locals won one of their two rinks against Newport Beach but went down overall 36-31.

The afternoon results were better, with an overall 42-34 win over Dural Country.

That included one rink loss and one win so amounted to four competition points and five for the day.

“We all could have bowled better,” South team captain Chris Myers said.

“We’re still in with a chance.

“The team that beat us lost this afternoon and the side we beat won this morning.”

That leaves all sides close together in the section standings except for Tura Beach which won both its games overall to skip out to nine points.

But if South Tamworth can roll Tura Beach this morning, that gap will close.

South has to win its section to make the final.

Coonabarabran began its section well with a big win over Lemon Tree Passage and finished the day out in front in section one.

The 39-21 win in the morning gave it the maximum five points and only a drawn rink in its 41-26 overall win over Park Beach in the afternoon prevented a perfect start.

Coona leads Merrylands by half a point at the top of that section going into round three.

In other round one results from section one, Cronulla RSL won 47-30 against Park Beach and Merrylands edged out Leeton and District 33-31while in round two, Leeton and District beat Cronulla RSL 42-31 and Merrylands beat Lemon Tree Passage 59-22.

In section two, Tura Beach was too good for Kemps Creek 53-25 and Crookwell Services scored a 38-34 win over Newport Beach in the morning while Tura Beach kept its run going with a 47-31 success against Crookwell and Dural Country beat Kemps Creek 48-34 in the afternoon.

At West Tamworth, the big guns were in action in the No.1 pennants finals while South hosted the No.2 and North Tamworth the No.4 playoffs.

The competition continues today.
