Skipper looks forward to taking on big boys

22/05/2008 8:48:00 AM
TOMMY Gemmell said he will have an easy job captaining the Group 4 side in Saturday’s Centenary Trophy if the honour goes his way again.

The Narrabri skipper led the G4 boys to a win over Group 19 at the Jim Sharpe Cup and in the first round of the Centenary Trophy three weeks ago.

He has been picked at lock again for the round two clash with G19 but being captain is no extra burden.

“When they asked me if I wouldn’t mind being captain I said I’d be honoured,” Gemmell said.

“All these boys are good players already.

“They all know their job and their role.

“I think it’s more talking to the ref, which I’m not number one at, but I’m learning.”

If Group 4 can get past G19 it comes up against Northern Rivers in the quarter finals of the NSW section of the Centenary Trophy.

That will be a big ask but it means the Group will be getting closer to the business end of the tournament.

“That’s the good thing about a knockout, you lose half the field every game you play,” Gemmell said.

“If we win this one we’ll be up with the big boys.

“But we have to get past Group 19 this week and then worry about that.

“I think we’ve got a better side than when when we played them last time.”

G4 beat G19 in the first week of April but G19 has a better side this time too.

Gemmell is part of a forward pack that also includes Damien Connor, Gavin Jarrett, Steve Trindall and coach Matt Parsons.

And the skipper is not the only Narrabri player in the side.

Fellow Kiwi import Tvita Mafi has been called up to play in the centres in place of the injured Jamie Mitchell.

“He’s a hard-running player,” Gemmell said.

“And he’s been going well for us.

“He’s got a slight injury at the moment but we’ll wait and see how he is.”

It’s a big weekend for the Narrabri rep players.

They have two big games at Scully Park in two days with West Lions the opponent on Sunday.

Last time they met West hammered the Blues 82-8.

“We go over there looking to make amends after last time,” Gemmell said.

“I play Saturday and hopefully get through that game and play West there on Sunday.

“I’ve played a few games there now, about six or seven.

“But it’s a good ground.”
