SID Turnham left the biggest cascade as Scully Park Swimming and Life Saving Club made a splash at last weekend’s NSW Winter Short Course Championships in Sydney.
Turnham’s efforts highlighted the strong performances of the 11-strong Scorchers contingent, returning home with a five-gold medal haul and a new record entry.
The 12-year-old star set a new championship mark in the 50m backstroke, and also smashed long-standing Scully Park records as he collected gold in that event, the 100m butterfly, 100m breaststroke, 100m freestyle and 200m individual medley.
The 100m freestyle was a particularly impressive swim, coach Chris Wallington said.
“He went in ranked second and the guy who was number one had gone under a minute,” Wallington said.
“We’ve been hoping for 12 months for Sid to go under the minute.”
“He was over a body length behind at the third turn (75m) and he swam him down.”
He touched in 58.50secs.
Turnham swam in 10 events all up, reaching the finals in all 10, and rounded out his weekend with three fourth placings.
Scully Park was one of 74 clubs competing and finished a very credible 22nd overall.
Turnham’s brother Harry was also among the medals, winning bronze in the 11yrs boys’ butterfly and placing just outside in fourth in the 50m backstroke and 50m freestyle.
Ellie Camilleri’s swim in the girls’ 10 and under 100m butterfly was another highlight for the club as she touched in fifth.
The entire squad performed well beyond expectation with Marlee Byrnes, Anna Camilleri, Molly Lyden, Laura Robinson, Mitchell Salter, Brock Smith and Toby Turnham all swimming personal best times.
Byrnes, Anna Camilleri and Toby Turnham were unlucky on the day, narrowly missing qualifying for the State carnival.
In all, the squad broke 10 club records, achieved 13 top 10 finishes and achieved 33 personal best times.
Sid and Harry Turnham and Ellie Camilleri are now turning their sights on the New South Wales State Short Course Championships on August 8/9 at Homebush.
