Coona and Inverell to fly the flag for North-West

24/07/2008 8:48:00 AM
THE north-west will have two State Pennants flag hopes on the green today after Coonabarabran and Inverell both reached the finals of their respective grades with final-day wins yesterday.

Coona collected an outright win over Cronulla RSL Memorial 40-27 to finish top of Section 1 in the No.3 Pennants at Tamworth City while in the No.4s at North Tamworth, Inverell were 41-25 victors over Sussex Inlet to also top Section 1.

They took the maximum five points after winning on both rinks, 27-14 and 21-17.

“It was a good win,” Inverell captain Betty Hawkins said.

“They played some good bowls.”

The eight of Vicki Walton, Jane Leader, Pat Campbell, Sharon King, Joy Vidler, Jan Anderson, Jackie Gobbert and Jan Moss were undefeated in their five round matches and were 87 shots ahead with 23.5 points.

“We only lost one side (rink) overall,” Hawkins said.

They will play Birrong in the final after they pipped Fairy Meadow by a point-and-a-half to win Section 2.

“They’ll be very tough but we’ll give it our best,” Hawkins said.

If successful, it will be their second title in five years after being crowned No.4 champions four years ago.

It would also complete a North West double after Coonabarabran took out the 4s last year.

This year they have stepped up to the 3s but again find themselves in the title mix after edging out Merrylands by a point-and-a-half to set up a final against Tura Beach.

Yesterday’s win, where they won easily on one rink 22-11 and had to fight hard to succeed on the other 18-16, was their fourth, with Tuesday morning’s loss to Leeton and District their only

blemish.

But while they are finals- bound, last year’s runners-up South Tamworth narrowly missed out despite a maximum points 58-26 win over Crookwell yesterday.

Their earlier two losses cost them as they finished four points behind Tura Beach.

The No.2 pennants final will also be played today at South Tamworth, with Bateman’s Bay playing Northmead, starting at 10am.
