KARTING
TAMWORTH Kart Racing Club’s annual Alan Cox Cup meeting has a vintage variation this weekend.
Not only will the club stage its annual 12 class meeting with more than 100 karts low-flying around Oakburn Park, it will also have some 50 vintage karts from all over Australia at its inaugural demonstration.
President Paul Hull and new publicity officer Craig Masters reckon this weekend will be one of the club’s best with the addition of those vintage karts.
“It will be a big weekend, especially with the vintage karts making it a bit special.
“We’ve got karts coming from as far away as Perth for their first ever vintage karts. None of them race, just have four classes of demonstrations.”
The vintage karts start from the early 60s or the old Victa lawn mowers, as Hull jokingly refers.
“None of the vintage karts can be licensed now and cannot race anymore,” he said.
“The whole history of kart racing will be there.”
Masters has stepped into his new job with gusto.
It’s also a bit of a labour of love for him as well because he’s also a sponsor, with his newly-started Master Karts kart building business.
He’s about to build new premises (near Gardenia Pools in Taminda) and is currently putting together two new XE 28 models with 125cc Leopard motors.
The karts have a top speed of around 130kmh and come equipped with a GPS system.
The Arrow CIK-framed karts cost around $7200 and are the top of the line.
Masters reckons rookie karts cost about $400 for young drivers hoping to start up.
This weekend’s racing starts Sunday with practice from 10am today.
The Vintage karts demonstrations will be run tomorrow with racing from 9am
Sunday.
