A CARAVAN holiday went horribly wrong for a Victorian couple north of Glen Innes on the New England Highway yesterday.
The couple – both aged in their 60s – were trapped when their late model Subaru and caravan rolled after leaving the road before hitting a tree.
The driver had reportedly lost control after being overtaken by a semi trailer at 10.30am.
Inspector McGilvray of Glen Innes police said the couple – from Point Leo in Victoria – told them turbulence from the passing truck caused the caravan trailer to rock out of control.
“The female driver... lost control of the car and... the caravan rolled off the road and into a tree,” he said.
“The car also rolled off the road.
“Both... were trapped for some time by their seat belts.”
The highway was closed for a short time.
“Police, members of the Volunteer Rescue Association, ambulance officers and the Rural Fire Service were present at the vehicle recovery,” Insp McGilvray said.
“There was some concern about gas tanks being carried on the caravan leaking,” he said.
The 67-year-old male passenger was taken to Glen Innes Hospital with minor injuries.
The driver, 64, reportedly suffered a fractured sternum and ribs. She was flown to Tamworth Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and was in a stable condition late yesterday.
