NEWS of Nestle’s closure plans is blow number two for Inverell, according to Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Andrew Cleaver.
“Last week it was the collapse of Bannister Corp,”Mr Cleaver said yesterday.
“This week it’s the pet food factory. As you can imagine the town is reeling.”
Mr Cleaver said the building company had left the community owing hundreds of thousands of dollars which was a real blow.
Now the loss of so many jobs just added to the town’s
disappointment.
However, Mr Cleaver believed a united and determined effort by business and government to put the onus on the Swiss multinational Nestle to assist those affected would work in favour of the
community.
“The meeting on Monday will involve all the stakeholders – chamber of commerce and industry, the council, State and Federal governments.
“We will be looking to see what can be done for business and workers affected by the closure. One thing that’s disappointed people is that nobody saw this coming. It’s just wrong.”
