LAST MINUTE doorknockers can still throw their support behind this weekend’s Red Shield Appeal, with volunteers encouraged to join the ranks of official Tamworth collectors on Sunday morning.
This year the city’s fundraising aim for the Red Shield Appeal is $100,000, with appeal organisers saying all donations – big or small – will be welcomed.
Would-be collectors can head to the front of Peel Street’s Westpac Bank at 9am on Sunday to volunteer for the annual fundraising drive led by The Salvation Army.
Captain Fran Everitt from the Tamworth branch of The Salvation Army said even small donations would go a long way.
“All small donations combine to make a large amount – last year the Tamworth community donated $106,000, and we are aiming for around the same this year,” she said.
“Any money donated will go towards the work of The Salvation Army nationally, for projects such as rehabilitation centres, flying doctors and services for the homeless.
“These services are really vital for people in our community. Although we might not need to access the services ourselves, we might have a friend or a family member who needs that support, now or down the track.”
Australian appeal director Gary Masters said the national doorknock goal for 2008 was $8 million. Combined with a business appeal and direct mail campaign, the overall target was $68 million.
“The recent interest rate rises and higher petrol prices are putting increased pressure on families and individuals. Many farmers are still suffering from the effects of the long drought, while other communities are recovering from the devastation caused by the recent floods. Many young people are fighting addiction and homelessness,” Mr Masters said.
“Traditionally in difficult economic times Australians tend to give more not less to The Salvation Army. We call on all Australians who have the capacity to give, to consider those in need by donating to the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal. By supporting others we are investing in our country’s future. Remember, we’re all in this together.”
More than 500 volunteers are expected to collect on behalf of the Tamworth appeal this Sunday.
Collectors will be clearly identified with ID tags worn around their neck. They will also be carrying receipt books in white plastic bags marked Salvation Army.
People who are missed by Salvos collectors can make a credit card donation via the national hotline number 13 SALVOS (13 72 58) or through the Salvation Army website www.salvos.org.au
The Salvation Army hopes to mobilise more than 100,000 volunteers for its Red Shield Appeal doorknock across the nation.
